Ted Menten
Artist Bio:
Prolific artist, designer, and author Ted Menten (1932-2019) was born in New York City to stunt pilot parents and raised in Greenwich Village. After briefly working at Disney Studios and as a stunt double, he became a successful commercial artist and package designer for companies including Helena Rubinstein, Houbigant Perfumes, and Avon.
In 1977, Menten introduced paper dolls to Dover Publications with "Victorian Fashions from Harper's Bazar," which remained in print for over 37 years. He introduced fellow artist Tom Tierney to Dover in 1978, launching Tierney's prolific career. Beyond paper dolls, Menten authored 25 books about teddy bears, created the comic strip character HUG, designed toys for Hasbro, and taught bear-making internationally.
He transitioned from traditional media to digital art in his later years, continuing to create paper dolls and comic art. His diverse career also included work as a TV director, Off-Broadway playwright (winning an Obie), and illustrator of children's Bible stories.
In 2010 Ted moved to an apartment in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia where he created numerous paper doll books for Dover and Paper Studio Press. Ted Menten's was the featured artist in OPDAG's Paper Doll Studio magazine, Issue 110 (2014).
